Undergraduate Optics Lab

Instructor: Jiun-Yann Yu, Ph.D.

Course schedule

Course materials

In this one-semester lab class, we go through the most important experiments that shape the history of modern (after James Clerk Maxwell's electromagnetic theory) optics. Topics include optical imaging, spectroscopy, interferometry, spatial frequency analysis, and digital holography.

The focus of this class is to develop in-lab skills and a scientist's mindset: it is observations and hypothesis, instead of theories, that comes before experiments. We encourage students to think like a scientist: how do we develop a testable prediction, and actually test it?
